Holiday Market Opportunities: Early Sales, Secondhand Scores, & Luxury for Less

Shoppers are preparing to spend big—this year’s total holiday spend is projected to average out at $1,478 per person, marking an 10% increase YoY, according to Deloitte’s 2024 Canada holiday retail outlook. However, consumers are looking for more budget-friendly alternatives, with 80% planning to shop promotional events, shoppers are prioritizing value over brand loyalty.1

Sustainable gifting is becoming a standout trend this holiday season, with 68% of shoppers saying they are very open to receiving secondhand gifts from friends and loved ones. For those seeking unique and meaningful options, secondhand items like clothing, vintage finds, and designer bags are at the top of wishlists. Additionally, 35% of shoppers are very likely to buy secondhand gifts, as they look for special items with added character and value2.

Search Demand: Sweater Weather & Holiday Fashion Take the Lead

As the holidays approach, shoppers are gearing up to spend on both themselves and their loved ones—so what’s trending this season? We’ve gathered the top searched terms that are currently making waves. 

Shoppers are on the hunt for versatile, cool-weather staples like sweater dresses and knee high boots, which have seen a 227% and 152% growth increase YoY (year-over-year). These styles seamlessly shift from casual afternoons to dressed up holiday gatherings, and have quickly become the ultimate transitional pieces, offering both comfort and style. 

Quilted jackets are trending in a big way, with searches climbing 103% YoY. Considered this season’s “it” jacket, they combine preppy charm with cozy practicality. Embracing the old money aesthetic, quilted jackets are part of a larger quiet luxury-inspired trend that highlights cashmere sweaters and pleated skirts—perfect for crisp autumn days.

The ‘90s/Y2K revival continues to dominate mood boards and influencer OOTDs alike. It comes as no surprise that order volume is up 57% and 44% for Juicy Couture Handbags and Vintage Coach respectively, proving that some styles are just as good the second time around. 

Women’s Top Categories + Brands: Personalized Accessories, Blasts From the Past & Comfort-First Shines

Whoever said you could only revive one decade’s trends at a time clearly hadn’t experienced the 2020s yet. With the rise and reach of social media, shoppers now have more agency than ever to choose style inspiration from across many decades. While Mules & Clogs (+43%) and Maxi Skirts (+52% in order volume YoY) bring a bohemian ‘70s vibe to the table, Y2K hard-hitters like Betsey Johnson (+79%), Coach (+78%) and Juicy Couture (+79%) infuse whimsy and colour into shoppers’ closets. 

Tennis-core fashion is taking center stage this season. Style-first activewear from Alo Yoga (+103%) and New Balance (+51%) are blending athletic function with everyday style. The release of the movie “Challengers” has further fueled this trend, driving interest in tennis-inspired outfits and boosting sales of mini skirts (+22%) and V-Neck Sweaters (+41%). This sporty-chic aesthetic reflects the growing demand for comfort without sacrificing style. 

Meaningful, personalized accessories are trending. Sales of charm-adorned pieces from brands like Pandora (+112% YoY) are thriving, partly thanks to a reimagining of simple totes by a new generation adding custom charms and keychains. This trend has fueled interest in charms for both bags and bracelets, keeping classic charm bracelets in vogue while expanding their use to modern accessories. Pearl jewelry has also seen a resurgence, with classic strands restyled by adding and layering colourful gemstones and mixed metals. This mix has sparked interest in vintage-inspired accessories, with bracelets up by 25% and rings by 103%. This era of personalization beautifully combines tradition with trend, proving vintage-inspired pieces are here to stay.

Men’s Top Brands + Categories: Elevated Basics, Edgy Luxury, & Travel-Ready Styles

The outdoor aesthetic and athleisure are dominating men’s fashion, as shoppers gravitate toward multifunctional, comfortable pieces. Orders for brands like Kuhl (+80%) and Arc’teryx (+29% order volume YoY) are driving this trend by blending style with practicality, perfect for both city streets and weekend adventures. The popularity of performance jackets (+18%) and sweatpants & joggers (+19%) highlights the demand for adaptable, adventure-ready styles.

Elevated basics and quality fabrications are top priority when it comes to building a capsule wardrobe. Ralph Lauren (+62%) and Brooks Brothers (+65%) are at the forefront, delivering high-quality and stylish essentials crafted to last. Wardrobe staples like sport coats and blazers (+140%) and cardigan sweaters (+132%) are driving the demand, catering to consumers seeking both function and timeless style.

Dare to be edgy? Streetwear brands like Supreme (+300%) and Moncler (+183%) are surging in popularity, appealing to shoppers looking for bold fashion statements. For the third year in a row, the iconic North Face Puffer has maintained its place at the top of wishlists, with shoppers flocking to Poshmark in search of this and other streetwear styles at a fraction of the retail price. 

From personal styling to stocking stuffers, shoppers are upgrading their accessories with new timepieces (+54%), and giving the gift of elevating everyday convenience with key and card holders (+275%).

Kids’ Top Brands + Categories: Top Toys & Durable Styles

This year, parents are focusing on shopping secondhand to invest in well-made and durable styles for their little ones without sacrificing their wallet. Demand for high-quality children’s clothing is on the rise, with brands like Jacadi (+100% in order volume YoY) offering timeless holiday outfits, while Ralph Lauren (+167%) delivers playful yet practical designs for everyday wear. 

When it comes to playtime, toys are at the top of every child’s list, with toy cars & vehicles (+238%) soaring in demand. Leading the surge in this category is Fisher Price, with nostalgic favourites from parents’ childhood toyboxes, while Thomas and Friends and Disney provide more contemporary characters, like Lightning McQueen. 

Family gatherings mean game time, from brain busters to board game classics, Mattel (+217%) and Hasbro (+28%) are keeping families entertained throughout the holiday season.

Home Top Brands + Categories: Sustainable Comfort Meets Creative Home Décor

They say the way to one’s heart is through their stomach, and shoppers are getting ready to welcome their loved ones home for the holidays by stocking their cooking spaces with YoY orders for kitchen tools and bakeware rising +125% and +120%. Good food and hosting go hand in hand, so it’s no surprise that kitchen linens (+83%) and serveware from Corelle (+550%) are high on everyone’s lists this season. 

Anthropologie (+550%) continues to bring bold, playful energy to home décor with patterned quilts, conversation-worthy dishware and other whimsical textiles. Anthropologie’s eclectic designs resonate with those seeking self-expression through unique home accents, making playful sheet sets and cozy throw blankets for fans of maximalism and creativity.

Electronics Top-Selling Brands: Retro Tech Returns

Shoppers on Poshmark are embracing both modern and nostalgic tech. Nintendo remains a top pick for gaming consoles, while Sony is seeing renewed interest, stemming from the popularity of retro camcorders and digital cameras. Gen Z and content creators are leading the charge in the vintage tech revival, swapping smartphones for Y2K-era gadgets. This trend reflects a desire for the classic, grainy aesthetic dominating social media. 

Luxury Top-Selling Brands: Vintage Prada, Cozy Moncler, and the Rise of Bottega Veneta 

Luxury fashion continues to thrive, driven by both classic and trending designers. Bottega Veneta (+1029%) is leading the charge as of late, with consumers clambering to get their hands on a Cassette Bag. Especially popular for its seasonal colours, this iconic padded bag remains coveted for its distinct woven design. 

Once known exclusively as a luxury brand, Moncler (+111%) has increasingly begun to lean into a secondary category among Canadians—streetwear. Their iconic Maya Down Jacket blends high-quality construction with edgy streetwear styling, favoured among many Canadians as an especially stylish way to beat the winter chill.

When it comes to trending jewelry, Cartier continues to ‘wow’ with timeless new and vintage designs. Year over year order volume for the brand increased +620% with items like their Tank Française Watch back in the spotlight, and the covetable and intriguing Juste Un Clou Ring on the fingers of every it-girl. 

This year, Sézane became a true darling brand for influencers and celebrities alike. With a highly influencer-driven marketing strategy, cozy oversized knits from the brand have been injecting an element of Parisian style into the fashion scene, pairing perfectly with everything from casual jeans to elevated skirts.

Widely understood as a legacy brand among luxury lovers, Gucci’s enduring influence has held as a result of its ability to evolve with changing tastes. Gucci sunglasses topped wishlists this year with a +229% in order volume, and all eyes on their futuristic wrap around styles. These frames made waves thanks to tastemakers like Beyonce and Charli XCX, whose effortless take on high-glamour shield-style shades inspired fans and fashionistas alike. Their influence transformed Gucci’s latest eyewear into the ultimate statement piece, bridging the worlds of luxury and modern edge with unmistakable style.

Louis Vuitton continues to lead the charge among luxury accessories with wallets (+83% order volume YoY) making their way into everyone’s carts this year. Embraced by modern shoppers for its versatility and dynamic look, Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogrammed offerings reflect the brand’s ability to stay relevant year after year. With options ranging from slim cardholders to larger pieces, there’s something for everyone. 

Sustainability-Driven, Top-Selling Brands: Where Style Meets Responsibility

Sustainability-driven brands are thriving, tapping into specific aesthetics that align with conscious consumerism and intentional style. Ganni and Doen are championing the Scandinavian Cool and Bohemian Luxe aesthetics, with YoY orders up +82% and +186% respectively. These brands are offering shoppers timeless pieces with sustainable sourcing and ethical craftsmanship—perfect for those curating capsule wardrobes. The rise of techwear and Gorpcore in men’s fashion has boosted order volume for Arc’teryx (+29%) and Columbia (+37%) and positioning them as leaders in performance-based, adventure-ready clothing that is designed with durability and longevity in mind. 

All of these brands prioritize comfort and sustainability, appealing to consumers seeking well-made, eco-conscious pieces. These brands exemplify a broader trend toward practical yet thoughtful fashion—items that are easy to integrate into any wardrobe and built to last.

Outside Influences: The Rise of Influencer-Owned Brands & Brat Summer

This year, the cultural zeitgeist was driven by bold statements and musician-led viral moments, with Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charlie XCX’s Brat Summer aesthetic taking center stage. Roan’s meteoric rise mirrors a broader trend of musicians influencing fashion, as her eclectic style and unapologetic persona resonate with fans seeking individuality. Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter’s soaring search interest reflects her dual impact as a pop star and style icon, seamlessly blending nostalgic ‘90s/2000s vibes with modern trends. Brat Summer captured imaginations as a playful, rebellious mood—signaling the growing influence of aesthetics rooted in carefree, Gen Z attitudes. Influencer-led fashion continued to evolve, with brands like Parke, proving that influencers are no longer just tastemakers, but serious players in the fashion space. Daily Drills, Dairy Boy, and Vancouver-Based Strawberry Milk Mob also saw impressive gains, showing that fans are eager to buy directly from their favorite creators. These brands thrive by focusing on sweatshirts, loungewear, and athleisure, tapping into the post-pandemic demand for comfort that doubles as streetwear. With versatile pieces that feel as good on the couch as they do running errands, influencer-led collections perfectly capture today’s blend of practicality, style, and personal expression.
