Poshmark Canada Turns One, a Report by Poshmark

Since launching in May 2019, Poshmark has built a vibrant community of over one million Canadians across the country who’ve collectively listed over C$100M worth of inventory. The Poshmark Canada community is creating inspiring side-hustles and full-fledged businesses, while also helping to accelerate the circular economy.

Meet some of the Seller Stylists powering Poshmark Canada.

Meet Lora, a fashion-lover since a young teen, who has made her passion her everyday by dabbling in luxury resale. After getting her start the day Poshmark launched in Canada, Lora has maintained a closet filled with new and pre-loved luxury handbags—most notably, her favourite sale of a black YSL Large College bag.

Lora’s #PoshTip for reselling designer items:
Photos! Clear images that accurately display the item say a thousand words, so you don’t have to! This leads to less questions, and buyers are able to make more confident purchase decisions.”

Goal for year two:
“As we adapt and navigate through 2020, I hope to inspire others to use the Poshmark platform as an opportunity to generate supplemental income from home.”

Side-hustling on Poshmark since August 2019, Vivian loves the creative process of styling and shooting outfits for her listings and giving people that “gotta have it” moment when shopping her closet.

Vivian’s #PoshTip for turning Poshmark into a side hustle:
Great communication! Include as much info as possible regarding size, quality, and feel of the garment (measurements are the BEST thing you can include)! This will save you plenty of time later by not having to go back into your inventory to reinspect or measure an item.”

Goal for year two:
“Connect with more Canadian Poshers and inspire more people to shop second hand. Also, to hit 1,000 listings!”

Selling on Poshmark since the Canada launch, Mayette has taken her business from a fun side-hustle to a full-time job. She has learned to stay organized by “establishing a routine that is easy and comfortable for me to follow.”

Mayette’s #PoshTips for taking the plunge into full-time Poshing:
“Keep yourself updated on the current fashion trends. Know what sells, when it sells,  how much it sells for, and where to get this inventory at the lowest possible costs so you can get the best margins.”

Goal for year two:
“Double my sales and add more luxury items to my closet!”

Meet Sanela, an avid-thrifter who’s constantly on the hunt for unique vintage pieces. Whether she’s on the lookout for “romantic pieces with an edgy touch” or “detail and authenticity,” Sanela has been reselling vintage clothing on Poshmark since day one. Her favourite flip this year? A vintage Celine cross-body bag.

Sanela’s #PoshTip for navigating a thrift store:
Use your time wisely. When thrifting, I first quickly make my way through the store and see if there are any gems that will catch my eye. I’m looking for unique patterns, prints, and colours. After that, if I have the time, I will go back through the aisles one more time.”

Goal for year two:
“Grow and refine the style of my closet to be more curated with unique vintage items and modern basics.”

Name a More Iconic Duo: Mister Rogers & the Cardigan, a Report by Poshmark

Ahead of the highly anticipated release of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood on November 22 — the new Mister Rogers movie — we took a look at the rise to fame of the men’s cardigan, including the most iconic cardigan looks throughout pop culture, and how to shop for and style this closet staple on Poshmark.

Few items in fashion have as much staying power or mass appeal as the cardigan.
With fans from President Jimmy Carter to rock phenomenon Kurt Cobain to everyone’s favorite
neighbor Fred Rogers—the cardigan is a menswear classic.

Like many fashion staples, the cardigan of today originated out of necessity.
The cardigan emerged as a variation of a military jacket in the 1850s and is now considered
a must-have item.

1854

James Thomas Brudenell, the 7th Earl of Cardigan, was considered a war hero and popularized his signature style: a knitted waistcoat, the original cardigan.

1968

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood debuted in the U.S. In the series, Fred Rogers started each episode by changing out of his work clothes and into his casual attire, including his signature cardigans and sneakers.

1977

President Jimmy Carter famously wore a cardigan for his televised speech about the energy crisis in the U.S.

1993

Kurt Cobain, the Nirvana frontman, wore a vintage green cardigan for his world-famous performance on the MTV series Unplugged in New York.

2016

Ryan Reynolds, who helped popularize wearing a cardigan beneath a blazer, was named GQ’s Man of the Year.

2019

Tyler, the Creator, known for his style and cardigan collection, headlined his first performance at Madison Square Garden for a cardigan-clad audience.

FRED ROGERS

Fred Rogers, everyone’s favorite neighbor, in his signature red cardigan. Mister Rogers started each episode by changing into a cardigan that was knitted by his mother specifically for the show. After his mother could no longer knit his cardigans, the low-cost production team procured zip-up cardigans from the same company that supplied them to the USPS and dyed them vivid colors in a soup pot.

JIMMY CARTER

President Jimmy Carter famously addressed the nation about an ongoing energy crisis in a tan cardigan. This cardigan is now on display at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta, Georgia.

KURT COBAIN

Kurt Cobain, whose style is the epitome of ‘90s grunge, wore a vintage green cardigan for his acoustic performance on MTV’s show Unplugged. The item is now a collector’s piece and in 2015, was sold for over $137,000. The cardigan was recently auctioned a second time and sold for $334,000, which set a record for the most expensive sweater ever sold at an auction.

RYAN REYNOLDS

Ryan Reynolds, 2016’s biggest superhero who’s known as much for his style and charisma as he is for his award-winning acting, was spotted in one of his favorite knitwear staples while promoting Deadpool: a blue button-down cardigan.

TYLER, THE CREATOR

Tyler, the Creator, a top artist from music to fashion, developed his iconic style as part of LA’s skater culture in the Fairfax District. In July 2019, he introduced the capsule collection Lacoste x GOLF le FLEUR* including a signature fuzzy pink cardigan that he wore to the French Open.

We took a look at how male shoppers have been finding their signature cardigan looks on Poshmark across the U.S. and Canada, just in time for the film’s release.
Since the premiere of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2019, cardigan searches increased, which led to a spike in purchases.¹

Red cardigans, a favorite of Mister Rogers, have been particularly in-demand,
with purchases jumping since the premiere of the film.¹

Lacoste, Rag & Bone, Polo By Ralph Lauren, and All Saints were some of the top-selling men’s cardigan brands on Poshmark across the States.²

Finding your own signature cardigan isn’t as intimidating as it may seem. The cardigan is a versatile menswear staple that can be worn under a blazer for a winter work look or over a T-shirt for an afternoon at the park.

NBA Style Icons – By The Numbers, a Report by Poshmark

Since the NBA instituted a dress code in 2005, the leagues’ best players have also become the biggest style icons. We took a look at how shoppers were inspired by players’ street style, just in time for the start of the 2019-2020 season. Here’s what we found.

The NBA’s best-dressed players have been flexing in coveted sneakers both on and off the court. From flashy to sophisticated, fans gravitated towards their favorite players’ kicks. To no surprise, Poshmark saw a surge in sneaker purchases and listings over the past year.
What were the top-selling sneaker brands on Poshmark during the 2018-2019 NBA season? Nike, Jordan, and Adidas led the charge, followed by Vans and Converse.

With nearly every NBA player making a statement with their footwear, players with brand partnerships boosted the sales of specific sneaker brands on Poshmark. Stephen Curry and James Harden helped drive sales for Under Armour and Adidas respectively, while P.J. Tucker, the NBA’s “Sneaker King,” drove interest in the most-hyped Nikes.

Who had the greatest impact on a brand based on the numbers? Stephen Curry and his partnership with Under Armour helped the brand climb three spots to the 7th most-purchased sneaker on Poshmark.

How players embraced business casual varied—from rocking florals and fedoras to turning out in vibrant glasses and button up shirts. Players like Iman Shumpert and Lebron James not only made “Best Dressed” lists, but also used tunnel fashion to elevate their brand off the court. Some of our favorite looks included hoodie-and-blazer pairings and full denim outfits.

The DeMatha look, also known as the hoodie-and-blazer NBA trend that Lebron James often rocks, also saw a boost on Poshmark. Listings of the two items increased 109% and 100%, respectively, compared to the year prior.

White denim was already hot, with purchases on Poshmark rising 56% in the last year—but Iman Shumpert made it even hotter. After his Vogue x GQ video shoot with wife Teyana Taylor, white denim sales climbed an extra 10%.

Player style was more attainable than ever with brand collaborations on the rise. Whether players were launching their own lines or partnering with established brands, fashion provided another opportunity for athletes to diversify their interests.

One of the most noted collaborations from the past year included Kevin Love’s BR/K.LOVE-18 Banana Republic menswear collection, with suit jackets standing out. Following the release, purchases of Banana Republic suit jackets increased 87% on Poshmark.

Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry embraced his inner dad vibe going all-in on the golf aesthetic with an Under Armour collaboration. Purchases of polos increased 72% on Poshmark with Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Under Armour topping sales.

Get ready for the start of the season by shopping these looks and more on Poshmark now.
