Q&A with Sofia Alvim—Professional Closet Organizer and Clutter Coach

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
A: I’m a professional organizer & clutter coach, as well as a coach for women encouraging them to live out loud. I also design, make, and sell jewelry. You could say I’m a bit of a creative chameleon!
Q: How did you discover your love and talent for decluttering/organizing?
A: Until I was about 18, I used to save everything. One day, I came across a book about feng shui that said you first have to un-clutter your space to un-clutter your life. It made me think of my own attachment to my things and I began to question the purpose of everything I owned.
I was always obsessed with boxes/containers and arranging things and so my friends would often joked I should be a professional organizer—yet surprisingly I didn’t really take them seriously! It wasn’t until I took myself on a journey of lightening my load and letting go of clutter, that my life shifted and I decided this is what I was meant to do. And since 2006, this has been my profession and calling, to help liberate people of what holds them back in life, at all levels.
Q: What are your favorite areas of the home to organize and declutter, and why?
A: I have to say my absolute favorite is closets, bedrooms, and living rooms—simply because they are all the spaces where we BE, exist, and spend most of our time. These spaces reflect who we are on the inside, so the more uncluttered we can make them, the better.
When it comes to closets and our clothing, we have to dress ourselves every single day! What we wear innately reflects who we are, what mood we are in, and what we want to project out into the world. If your closet is disorganized and overflowing with inadequate items, you can’t start your day with you best foot forward. You want to dress yourself for your best life, everyday!
Q: How do you help your clients decide what to keep and what to let go of?
A: Letting go of what no longer serves you is the mantra I always use when working with clients.
The ultimate goal is to get you wearing 80% of your clothes and list the rest. Clothes that don’t reflect your personality and current style, feel cumbersome or take effort to wear; the ones that you like but never seem to make it off the hanger, let them go and list them on Poshmark! Someone else is bound to love what you list.
Only, keep pieces that fit your body and that you absolutely love and will want to wear repeatedly. As an expression of the love you have for yourself, keep pieces that are MORE YOU—that will make your style will shine!
Q: What are your top tips to help Poshers to jump start their spring cleaning?
A: Put on some music, and start going through the area/room/space that will give you the most relief the fastest. Have a friend come sit with you to make it easier from start to finish!
For closet spring cleaning: begin by sorting similar items into categories. All socks, all shoes, pants, dresses, etc. Next step is to choose and purge items one category at a time. Start by selecting what goes (list on posh, donate, etc.) and what stays. Rather than going through a drawer or closet, this process makes it easier to make decisions because you know exactly how many pieces (in each category) you start with, and how many you end with.
Once you have pieces that stay, they go back in your closet and drawers and what gets listed is now ready for someone else to love.
